For the past two months I've been without my own computer, and so have not been able to do any scanning/digital work. Its been driving me crazy. So yesterday I decided to hitch a ride down to MICA and utilize their wonderful facilities to scan a load of new sketches. They are all now up on my new website: www.zbauer.com. Once I get my own computer back from the shop I'll possibly be painting some of these sketches up. In the mean time, I'll be updating regularly here with what I've got scanned.

ArtRage Pencil Sketching

Here's a quick little sketch I did today entirely on the computer with my Intuos and ArtRage. I hadn't really used the program before, but now after just a little bit of use I love it! I haven't really enjoyed trying to draw on a computer before this, as its never quite had the right kind of tooth for me. After this though I'm hooked. I'll never have to worry about smudging drawings with the side of my hand again!

A Long Overdue Hello

*wipes the sleep from eyes* Oh hello there! How long have I been out for? That long? Really? Holy crap! Well thank you for still having the urge to visit here! Heres what happened during the past six odd months:

November: Started working at Big Huge Games as an Assistant Artist doing textures.
November-March: Worked over 40 hours a week doing textures.
March: Got laid off during massive cuts in staff.
April-Current: Drawing/painting bunches. Also looking for a new job

The following is a whole load of sketches I've been doing since the last real update.

There you go! I'll hopefully be posting very regularly again from now on. New stuff soon!

Dwarven Lighthouses?! Believe it.

I decided it was about time to try something new in 3d. How about a building? Sounds good. Here's a couple renders of a little modeling practice I did over the weekend. It is a Dwarven Lighthouse, and is based off a concept from WAR which can be found here. The poly count is somewhere around 2,800. I'm not sure if that's good or bad as I've never actually seen anyone make a low poly building/environment. Textures should come eventually.

Yeti/Lockhammer and The Pain of Being Dead 2: BALTIMONSTER

Here's a new painting I just recently finished. All digital again. Its a constant learning experience right now every time I work in photoshop. I recently picked up painter, so I'm going to try messing around with it soon, there will be updates when something of note comes out of that. Coming up, I'll also be starting work on a 36x48" oil painting. I'm super excited about that. I haven't seriously painted in oils since my freshman year at MICA, and even though I got into MICA with all oil paintings, I feel like I'm going to be learning the medium all over again. It should be fun/challenging/rewarding, which is the best way things should be.

Oh, I almost forgot! For those of you that havn't heard yet, my work is going to be on display alnong with a bunch of other fantastic artists in a show titled The Pain of Being Dead 2: BALTIMONSTER. The painting further up in this post, along with the Golden Yeh Rén and the Five Fingers of Olympus painting are all going to be up. Here's the info straight from the gallery's write up:

The Golden Yeh Rén and Lobster Johnson

I know I promised these a little while ago, but here it is! New stuff! I've been working more and more with my wacom and its just been super convenient and enjoyable. Anyway, this first guy is a member of a tribe of ape-men called the Golden Yeh Rén. They live deep inside mountains near lava flows, and are the hated enemies of the Yeti. This was entirely digital, except for the sketch of that glove (read previous post for explanation). More on these guys to come in the future. He's super fun to draw and I already have some ideas I'm interested in persuing for other members of the tribe. This guy is the keeper of that long handled sword and glove. They're probably magical.

Up next is the finished front and side view of Lobster Johnson's turnaround. I'll probably eventually do a back view. That'll come whenever I feel like modeling him. I'm not to big on doing fan art, so spending a long time on something like this gets a little taxing. I really like him though, but its time for some new hotness to come out of the ol' creative juice factory.

It's pretty late now, and past my bedtime. In the future expect an update on the job situation, diploma status, a finished Hercules 3d model, and a painting featuring Willem Lockhammer from the Guild of Huntsmen. Its for a gallery show I'm going to be part of that opens in October. More on that later in the week.

Sketch Explosion!

Hello! Its good to see you here! Its about that time that I post something on here to prove to myself that I havn't been sitting around doing nothing since my summer classes got out. One thing that I have been doing a fair amount of is sketching! The images that follow are just that. Hooray!
This is one of the many spreads I filled in my sketch book of Lobster Johnson drawings while I was trying to figure out just how I wanted him to look. This is the drawing that pretty much set it in concrete, as you can hopefully tell by the speech bubble.

This here is one of the sketches I did recently for Hercules. I'm planning out another painting to do based more on the story this time. We'll all have to wait and see when that piece gets its turn at being painted.

My favorite cowboy monster hunter, Willem Lockhammer! I'm going working a lot more on him and his story in the coming months. I also have a friend thats going to be helping me blast out some stories for to be made into comics. Yeah, I'm pretty pumped about that. A full line of character concepts will be blasted out before that happens though. They should be around in the somewhat near future, after I get some other things done.

This is just a Viking that decided to stop by and remind me that I had to watch Good Will Hunting for class the last weekend. Worry not, it was watched, and a paper was written on it. He was pretty fun to draw, and he, just like every other sketch in this post, isn't really finished due to my terrible judgement as to placement on the page. Moleskins are officially too small for me.

And lastly, a little sneak peak as to what piece I'm cooking up right now. This is just a detail sketch I did for the glove that this wild man is wearing. It looks way cooler in the painting. I still enjoy the sketch though. It's the only part of the painting done not on the computer. I'm enjoying Photoshop more and more now. Maybe it's due to my lack of room to paint, maybe it's because I like not having to spend so much time cleaning up afterwards. Or maybe it's because I finally feel like I got the hang of my tablet. Only time will tell.

I'll be posting the finished Lobster Johnson piece and something completely new, but related to that glove, some time at the end of next week. Untill then, stay gold.

No work to post currently. I went on vacation to visit my parents in Connecticut for the past 5 days, and before that was finishing up the last bit of my summer classes. I have been working on some pretty cool things though. Once they're all done I'll post them and maybe some progress shots mixed in. I'm going to try and streamline this posting process a bit more in the future so instead of some in-progress posts and then a final post, it'll all be together at once. I like the sound of that more.

On a side note, this is pretty much my favorite animal right now. I present to you the Golden Monkey, or the Chinese Snub-Nosed Monkey:

There's the Claw!

So I entered the Comicon Challenge over at gameartisans.org, my entry can be viewed here. I chose Lobster Johnson as the character I'd be redesigning/having fun with. For those that don't know hes a pulp crime fighter/paranormal investigator from the Hellboy/B.P.R.D. comics. He pretty much rules school. This is a cropping of the turnaround I'm working on. I have a bunch of sketches in my sketchbook that need scanning, but I'm currently on Karoline's laptop in the UMBC library and away from any sort of scanner. I'll post some of my Lobster sketches when I get near one.

Also, I've been working on the Hercules model a bit more when I have some free time from classes, their subsequent homework, drawing, and the ultimate time vacuum of night time video game relaxation. I'll post that also when I get back home. Until next time.

Keep on keepin on

Hey everybody. Just wanted to let everyone know I'm still working on stuff, and not just 3d. I had been thinking about this eskimo-type character for the Guild of Huntsmen comic for a while. I did some drawings, all of which were either bad, or worse. But during my art history class yesterday I noticed these two small ovals that had made it onto the page of my sketchbook some how and thought, "Hm that would be a sweet head to beard ratio." Exact words, i swear. And it turned into the head and goatee of the small guy on the top left. I finally did something i liked for this guy. I'm probably going to settle with the look on the right, or something close to it. A complete drawing will be posted whenever i get around to doing character mock-ups for everyone. I have someone thats going to help me write a story for a complete series. Its going to be epic. Yetis will probably be involved in some way.

This next drawing i did while sitting at the laundromat today. I was pretty upset with myself for not working on something for the project rooftop "Superman: Man of Style" challenge. So this is a quick, half hour in my sketch book drawing i did. Maybe I'll finish it? what do you think? The bottom of the drawing is the bottom of my sketch book, so it'll have to be finished digitally. Which would be sweet because I'd then have a good reason to get some digital painting time in. Yeah?

And lastly, an update on the Hercules model. The head is actually almost done again after a crash i had. It always seems to crash when i get into a modeling trance and forget the whole "saving your work" idea. Anywhoo, its a bit further along than this, but i don't have a more recent screen grab so this'll have to do for now. More to come later in the week, time for some literature class writing. Hooray!

A Dry Spell

Hey everybody. My apologies for being so neglecting to this thing the past few weeks. Moving, finding a job, and everything in between have kept me from producing much artwork. But all that is now over. I'm all moved in, started making money again, and am back doing what i love. I just started making a 3d model of Hercules. I've spent just a couple hours so far, getting back used to edge pulling again. Heres a screen grab:

I've also been slowly working on finishing up the textures on Camulus, along with starting some new and exciting digital paintings. Updates on here should be back to normal in the next couple weeks. Woo!

I started getting some work done on the textures on this guy finally. They're all flat colors at this point. But its also got Ambient Occlusion, and some intensive Normals. I can't wait to get him finished for reals. He'll be done next tuesday!

Back Yard Adventures

The pencils for my next comic for Sequential class are done! I'm pretty pleased with how they came out. Getting to draw Hercules beating up monsters, while having it relate to my childhood was a fun experience. The assignment was to do a comic based on something from our youth. And my youth consisted pretty much wholly of me and my brothers adventuring in the woods behind my house, stomping down ferns, and other such awesomeness. So I decided it would be perfect to do a comic about that. Maybe one day, if this Hercules project gets picked up this'll be some story about how when he was a kid he'd pretend to go on big adventures, and sure enough one fell into his lap when he grew up. I don't know though. I just wanted to draw him punching some stuff. And having an evil king get really pissed about it. I didn't want to worry about getting the likeness of me as a little kid, so i just came up with one that I thought would fit with the older Hercules.

The last line is, "Awww, porkchops again?!"

Also for next week will be the last painting I'm probably doing for thesis. It's Camulos charging into a cave, sword drawn, beatin' up some fungus men. Hercules V. Zombies, Camulus Model Concept, & Old Gauche sketch

So here it is, the painting that took way too long. I don't even know what to say about it at this point. Its the same size as the painting I posted in the last entry, 24x16 and completed entirely in gouache. I used a process on this that I hadn't used before which was doing a drawing, scanning it, then printing it out the size of the stretched paper and using a transfer marker to get the drawing onto the paper. This seemed like a good idea at first, but the first time I tried I had already primed the paper and put a layer of matte medium on. Because of this, when I used the acetate based transfer marker it fused the paper to the matte medium. When I pulled up the paper, it brought some of the matte medium with it and gave my nicely primed paper a nasty roughness to it. So after re-stretching the paper, and transferring the drawing pre-prime, I finally had a good base to start the painting with. I will probably never use this process again, at least not on something this size, as it used multiple markers just to get the job done. And it took waaay too long. I could've just redrawn the thing in the same amount of time.

So after all that was done, I went into painting it. Which with gouache took me about four to five weeks. But with my schedule at the time, I was only working on it one to two days a week. I could've maybe done it quicker. Who knows, I just know that I got a lot better at painting with gouache during the process.

This next piece is the concept I did before I started modeling Camulus in 3d. I realized I hadn't posted it yet, and thought it was about time I did. Its just done in pencil on bristol. Hes a big dude. I mean, he is celtic got of war and all. And those Scotsmen loved their war. Hes got a really big sword, which still needs to be modeled in 3d.

And lastly heres a gouache piece I did during class a year ago, but never got around to scanning until now. Its pretty small in real life, maybe 10x4 inches. I still really enjoy it, which is why I'm posting it. It was done for an inclass assignment where we had to illustrate droplets. And I do enjoy a good spray of blood. So I decided I'd paint a samurai, blood splattered across his face, roaring into the sky. He was fun to do. Maybe I'll do more with him in the future. Only time will tell.

On a side note, I took a bunch of reference photos for my comic I'm working on now. Expect penciled pages for that to be up this week, along with sketches for the 3 paintings I'll be completing in the next 4 weeks. Super intense deadlines as always. Until next time

Japanese School Girls, waiting to go home & Big Huge Open House

So I told myself last week that I was going to try and update this thing daily, but then realized theres no way I would be able to keep that up with the schedule I'm currently on. So, instead of that I am determined to keep this thing updated at least 2 times a week, which doesn't mean just two times a week. I mean that at very minimum. I'll keep you updated with sketches I'm working on, paintings that are in process, work thats completed, and anything in between. Nothing out of the ordinary to what i've been doing so far.

Ok! So last semester I did a couple paintings for my Advanced Illusionism class that got put on hold from when I was hit by a car. One of the paintings I did was of four Japanese school girls waiting in line. I don't really know if it was about anything or not, I just wanted to do a painting that had multiple figures in it, and would look nice. So I produced this one, It was my first real dive into painting with gauche on a larger scale. The dimensions are 24 x 16. I like working at this scale, though it takes a long time, I really enjoy the freedom i have in my brush strokes. This isn't very obvious from this piece since its all flat colors, but believe me its fun. It didn't show up very well in the scan, but the white on their clothing is actually super textured. I painted it with thick paint on a tiny brush, it looks nice in person. I used ink for the black line and the black in their hair, it gave it a nice rich black that I enjoy. I wish I could've posted this piece sooner, but it wasn't documented until only last Wednesday. Here it is:

Speaking of last week! On Thursday I gave my seminar presentation on the work I've been doing this whole time I've been at school. I thought it went over pretty smooth in the face of choppy waters. I say this because as I proceeded through my slides, only the first two were in order. After that it was random comic book page here, painting there, sketch book page next, maybe some character work after that, etc. Even after I spent a good amount of time getting everything in order in the folder all the images were in. It kind of jostled me a bit in the beginning, but you just have to keep going in these situations, and I gave it my best. My business and post cards weren't in on time, and still aren't. Here's hoping for Monday! Speaking of a lost opportunity for those business cards!

I went to the Big Huge Games open house on Thursday right after my seminar presentation. Even though, after a few hiccups my car-full and I arrived late and missed their demos, which were probably fantastic, but arrived just in time for portfolio reviews. I managed to get a personal review with Dave Inscore which went pretty well. Though it would've been nice to have a leave-behind to give him, I think future discourse will be promising. I also had a review with two of the BHG 3d artists, that also went pretty well. They checked out my in-progress Zbrush model and had some positive things to say about it. I'm still working on him, moving my way down the beard, getting the rest of the model prepped for Zbrush.

Expect the long awaited Hercules V. Zombies painting to be posted tomorrow. It would've been in this post, but I didn't want to overload it. Plus its past my bed time. Until next time.

Energy Drink

I realized I never posted anything about this energy drink I designed the packaging for last semester. So here it is! Its called Brain Booze, a Russian coffee flavored alchoholic energy drink with enough caffeine and sugar to make your head pop.

Everything was looking pretty good in the sketch, so the final was a pretty easy process:

It was finished entirely in illustrator. I don't really use illustrator that often, but when I do it usually works out pretty well. Its a tedious process, but the great thing is that i can print this at 20 feet tall if I wanted, and nothing would get lost. Totally great!

Camulus in 3d! Low Poly complete

So I'm 100% done with the low poly version of my character for 3d Character Design. He's all unwrapped, as can been seen in the picture below. This has been one of the most exciting projects I've done while at school here. I've learned something new every week, and my project is coming out really well. This guy's been really fun to model, and it'll be really great once hes all textured.

So i finally got my hands on Zbrush and man-oh-man is it a jolly good time. Up above is an in-progress shot of the sculpt I'm doing on my character's head. After its all done, it will be baked as a normal map onto the low poly model. This will then make the low poly version have the appearance of having all that detail in 3d when it actually doesn't. For instance, the whole body with accessories is a total of around 9000 polygons, and his head/beard in the high res version is about 2.7 million polygons right now. So yeah, Zbrush is great, and it really makes extra sense after all the sculpie sculpting I've been doing over the past few weeks.

Expect that to be posted by the week's end along with the Hercules v. Zombies painting. No rest for me.

PROFESSIONAL! HERCULES!

I ordered my website, business cards, and post cards today. I feel like I'm finally becoming a little more legit. hooray! I'll post the link and images when everything goes through.

but for now, heres a sketch from the ol' hercules sketchbook:

This is a sketch i did a while back really quick. I didn't think much of it at the time, but its become one of my more favorite little drawings in the sketchbook. I'm going to be doing a painting similar to it in the upcoming weeks. It's depicting Hercules at the beginning of his last day of work right before the zombies attack. As you can tell, hes really excited about his job. The sign won't say pandora.com; that was just a note last semester to remind me to go there. His real sign will say something about burgers. Delicious, zombie makin' burgers.

These knives were some weapon concepts i did for the Hydra. I looked at a lot of pacific island weaponry before I did these. He may use them if ever I make a real image of them fighting. It'll be intense, as thats the scene when Hercules has the Five Fingers of Olympus bestowed upon him. And there's also a huge number of the Hydra attacking him. I can't wait to have the time to paint it, it will be glorious.

In the upcoming weeks expect the Hercules v. Zombies painting that I took forever to finish to be posted. Along with sketches for a new comic including: A little kid, Hercules, Serpents, A boar monster, Some other monsters, and evil King Eurystheus. I'll also be posting more progress on my 3d character class model, and some progress shots of the Hercules sculpt I'm working on. AND lastly sketches for 3 new paintings to be finished before the end of the semester: One is Hercules relaxin' with a sign, another is Hercules v. the Erymanthian Boar, and lastly will be Camulus fighting a bunch of sea moss/fungus men. Phew. lots to do! You better bet that comic will be done before the end too.

Cold Feet Cover FINISHED

So I decided not to add the comic company logo and tag, and went back into the colors and text. This is the final version of the cover. I'm pretty happy with it. I'm really enjoying inking like this. I just wish I had the time to do a full comic, and not just 5 pages. Speaking of which!

So thats it, theres the five pages of my first comic ever. Its pretty much the most epic super short comic i know of. Tell me what you think, I would love some solid feedback on this.

GUILD OF HUNTSMEN sketch

So I'm working on a mock cover for my comic "Guild of Huntsmen." It follows a real cowboy named Willem Lockhammer and a Tibetan monk named Jampa Phosha as they attempt to rid a region of Tibet of it's Yeti problem. Right now its a quick 5 pages, which is a page more then what was needed for my sequential class, but it could easily be expanded to a full series. Jampa is never really introduced, he just kind of appears on the first page, I like him though, I would love to go into his background, and tell more of his special abilities.
Willem Lockhammer is a mysterious dude that rolls in old west style. Complete with two massive revolvers, which hes pretty good with, a bandanna around his neck, leather boots, and a sweet poncho, hes all you could want from the type of character he is. He doesn't wear a hat though, I had him with one for a good while, but then realized it would get lost pretty easy with all the monster fighting he'll be doing, so that got the nix and I gave him sweet goggles instead. Why does he have goggles you ask? Only he knows that. Maybe one day they'll come off, but that would mean something really bad happening. Like a town in Colorado being vaporized, or something along those lines.
Anyway you can see a snip-it of the comic on the left hand of that crappy picture taken from my cell phone. That bottom panel is super sweet, you just can't tell yet. but it is. I've started inking the cover already, All thats left is to finish that up, add some sweet hand lettered text, and color, and then it'll be done and everyone can read it. The whole maybe 100 words it is. There is a lot of panels though. And that makes me happy. Oh by the way, this is that first comic I was telling you about. In case you can't tell, I'm enjoying making comics.
The next one is about me when I was a little boy, pretending I was a mighty warrior- doing what you ask? you guessed it, fighting monsters and the like. I can't wait to draw it. It's going to involve some sort of shingle-horned nymph demon and maybe a golden apple and maybe a 100 headed dragon. We'll see how that goes.
I have a great deal of work to do leading up to Commencement. Besides this cover, the next comic, and my 3d character I've been continuously doing. Theres also another huge Hercules painting in which he will be fighting the Erymanthian Boar. Another Hercules painting which might turn into a cover image for the next comic. And a painting of Camulus fighting a bunch of swamp monsters. Thats just the studio work... But if I do a comic page a week, and a painting a week, I should be able to do it. Cheer me on, I'm going to need it.

So heres an in-progress turnaround of the model I've been working on for the past few weeks in 3D Character Animation. Dont worry, his cape is there from the front, thats just a problem with the render for his front view. I've most recently been figuring out the beard and his hair. This guy's takin' a real long time to finish. I start unwrapping him tomorrow. Then he'll be on his way to being a real boy! More on this in the coming weeks.

Soon I'll be posting my first ever comic, a sweet painting I worked on for forever, and maybe some more characters. But that'll come when the right time arrives.

I havn't scanned anything in a while, nor have i posted. so heres some more sketches from the vault of last semester. these are a couple of early drawings of hercules, right after i took a bunch of reference photos of my friend kyle.

an this is a sweet knight i drew for part of a poster for the young playwright's festival.

And this is that same guy I did in the last post, but for a different project in digital illustration. It was about the backgrounds of nursery rhymes, can you guess which one it is? Now I'm working with him for my 3d Character Modeling class, and hes way more bad ass. He just keeps getting better! more on that later.

Update! Heres a sketch for a piece I'm working on for the final in my digital illustration class. Its based off of Frank Frazetta's first Conan cover.I then lightboxed the small sketch onto a bigger piece of paper. (Still in progress.)
Scanned in the drawing and went to work with my poor-mans photoshop skills. (still in progress)
More updates to come as it reaches completion!

First real post! hooray! I thought I should finally post some of the stuff I've been working on this semester up on this blog o' mine. So here goes.

Here is the first two spreads in my sketchbook for Thesis. I started thinking about how I wanted the art for my project to look.

This is the turnaround for the main character in my senior thesis, Herculese. (spelling intentional, and coloring in process)

A sketch I did for the Hydra character. I had a lot of fun coming up with a look that wasn't just a serpent. I wanted it to be a sort of underwater human. So i combined a squid, a large-mouth bass, and a slight samurai armor feel to come up with the look for him. When herculese fights him in the story. Instead of growing more heads, he makes mirror images of his body. So herculese is eventually fighting a small army of fish people.

I'll post some more things soon. After i get the good stuff scanned in.
